The history of Sinai Reform Temple is one of
achievement, determination, and joy.
In 1948, thirty-five Bay Shore families who wished to affiliate with a liberal Jewish congregation formed the South Shore Discussion Group, which met in Bay Shore's Community Building. In those early days, Shabbat services were held each Friday evening in the Community House, with members bringing chairs, prayer books, Holy Ark, and Torah scroll to and from the service each week.
A religious school was soon organized and membership expanded to fifty families. The South Shore Discussion Group was renamed Temple Sinai of the South Shore.
Late that year, Temple Sinai purchased its first home on the site of its current location at the corner of Brentwood Road and Union Boulevard.
In January 1964, Sinai Reform Temple, as it had come to be named, dedicated its new Sanctuary building.
After the temple was sadly destroyed by arson in 1991, the Bay Shore community rallied to our aid, and services continued at various locations, including the Spirit Alive Center of St. Patrick's Church, Bay Shore Jewish Center, and the Interfaith Chapel at NYIT's Central Islip campus.
Our current facility was completed in 1993, and 2011 marked our Chai anniversary. We look forward to celebrating many more anniversaries and other celebrations together!
